ADSO response to the Government response to the Committee on Standards in Public Life recommendations

Following the recent publication of the Government Response to the Committee on Standards in Public Life report, please find the statement from ADSO.

ADSO shares the disappointment expressed by others in the Government’s belated response to the Committee on Standards in Public Life recommendations published in January 2019. The response does not do justice to the many excellent recommendations from the Committee designed to improve the standards regime within local authorities. It also fails to provide adequate support for Monitoring Officers and local Council Clerks in their efforts to manage standards of conduct.

The Committee’s recommendations if accepted would undoubtedly have strengthened the standards arrangements whilst allowing for local flexibility and choice.

We do however welcome the commitment from the Government to work with local authority representatives to improve the standards regime going forward. We hope that this is followed through in a timely manner.
