ADSO training course – “Standards and Ethics”(LB Brent) **fully booked** @ Brent Civic Centre

This one-day course will cover the current legal framework for ethics and standards within local authorities, including:

  • councillor codes of conduct
  • member complaints procedures and investigations
  • the roles of the Monitoring Officer and Deputy (including Democratic Services) plus the Independent Person
  • members interests, dispensations and rules on participation in meetings
  • predetermination and bias

The course will also focus on the recently launched report from the Committee on Standards in Public Life and the many recommendations within that report.

There will be a good mix of information giving, inter-action through group discussions and scenarios plus plenty of opportunities to ask questions and exchange information/good practice.

Target Audience: This course is aimed at inexperienced staff who want to gain a greater understanding of the workings of Council and the governance arrangements of Local Authorities. It is also directly relevant for learners undertaking the Certificate in Democratic Practice.

 

The workshop will include discussions around the following topics:

  • The Council meeting and its role
  • Governance options and arrangements
  • Executive Arrangements – their form
  • Executive Arrangements – functions and decisions
  • Committee System
  • Governance changes and decisions
  • Governance in the UK
  • Evaluation of Executive arrangements and the Committee system
  • Conclusions, Feedback and Action Planning

ADSO London Branch – Summer Seminar 2019 @ London Councils

The ADSO London Branch Summer Seminar will take place on Friday 5th July 2019 9.30am – 2.30pm at London Councils, 59½ Southwark Street, SE1 0AL

This year the branch are focussing on the challenges faced by Local Government and we will be hearing from Chief Execs, Councillors and Democratic Services Managers.

There will also be some facilitated workshops covering the following areas:

Governance Reviews – What is the Point?
Setting Boundaries – Personal Resilience for Managing Professional Challenges
Being a Councillor – what the challenges are and what I need from Democratic Services?

The London Branch AGM will take place at 12.30pm, followed by a networking lunch.
