Weekly message from John Lynch, Director of Finance

Hi Everyone

Good luck to those dealing with elections next month and I trust all is going well. For the rest of you, I hope you have been able to enjoy some of the sunny weather.

Webinar – The New Model Code of Conduct
Members can now book onto our webinar on Friday 20th May 10.30am to 11.30am where Paul Hoey from Hoey Ainscough will discuss the new Model Code of Conduct. For more information and booking visit:  https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/6297938155073450508

The webinar last week on the Levelling Up agenda attracted the highest attendance so far with over 100 participants throughout the whole session. Feedback was very positive. Up to now, we have strictly limited each webinar to 1 hour even if all the questions have not been answered. Following the above feedback, we have agreed to build in an extra 15 minutes contingency in case there are still outstanding questions when we reach the hour point. So whilst we will aim to keep to the hour, please be prepared to stay on an extra 15 minutes maximum if required.

2. Structures and Functions: The anatomy of Local Government
ADSO is hosting the interactive, virtual course ‘Structures and Functions: The anatomy of Local Government’.  The course will be delivered as two, two-hour workshops held virtually.  Delegates will be required to attend both of the virtual workshops.

Local government in England and Wales is complex and constantly evolving. The workshops will help learners to be more effective in their roles by:

  • Explaining local government’s place in the UK’s constitutional arrangements
  • Unpicking the different kinds of authorities and councils and what they do
  • Exploring the geographies of local government and the drivers of change: Is bigger better?

This course is aimed at Democratic Services Officers who wish to develop their understanding of the different kinds of local authorities, what they do and how they fit into the wider government landscape of the UK.  The target audience will be those who are relatively new to democratic service teams and those with a few years’ experience.

  • Tuesday 5 July 2022 – 9:30 – 12:00
  • Wednesday 13 July 2022 – 13:30 – 16:30

Delegates are required to attend both workshops. https://www.adso.co.uk/adso-training/book-your-course/

Just Giving Fundraiser
Many of you will have heard of the tragic passing of Jenni Swift’s 15-year-old daughter, Evelyn. The family have set up a ‘Just Giving’ page to raise money for three charities – Beat, Young Minds and Parenting Mental Health. If you wish to make a donation the link to the page is: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/inmemoryofevelyngibson

ADSO has sent Jenni a message of condolence and support on behalf of all our members and we have made a donation to the above appeal.
