Weekly update from Susan Biddle, Director of Training

For those of you who experienced elections last week I hope they went well and that the Bank Holiday enabled you to relax and re-charge your batteries a bit.  It’s lovely to have the clutch of bank holidays around this time of year, provides so many opportunities for ‘improving’ activities such as enhancing the garden and sprucing up the paintwork.  Spring cleaning has been on my mind and I have been talking to our group of trainers about their role, ADSO’s training offer and how we position ourselves in the future – I see it as a kind of stocktake and general refresh, perfect for this time of year.

As a new Director of Training, and coming from an extensive and long (yes really long even though I look so youthful) training background I have given myself the task of getting to know our regular group of trainers and seeking feedback on ADSO’s training offer as part of my individual annual objectives.  We held our first Trainer’s Network meeting at the end of March and covered a surprising amount of ground.  It was a great opportunity for me to meet the trainers and learn from their experience as well as get them to use that experience to tackle some outstanding issues, including:

  • how can we connect into the ADSO membership to inform and improve the training offer
  • how can we improve evaluation so that it informs course development
  • how can trainers add value at annual conference
  • what other forms of training should we be looking at and for what purpose.
As a result, those trainers who were able to attend agreed to help me create better links to the ADSO membership via regional meetings.  Our idea is that trainers attend their local regional meetings and offer an agenda item on training to seek feedback on the programme we offer and engage in a discussion on fitness for purpose and currency of our offer.  Do get in touch if you are interested in putting training on your agenda and we’ll try to get someone along to lead the discussion and feedback to me on issues raised.

John Austin mentioned the new course being developed on the role of the Company Secretary last week.  It’s planned for September so keep an eye on the website for the date if you are interested.  In addition we have the following open courses scheduled:

Just a Minute – 10th July Tamworth

Just a Minute – 19th July London (Wandsworth)

Law and Practice – September Wigan (to be confirmed)

Working in a Political Environment – 5th November  – London

Have a good week, Susan.
