Weekly Update from Vice Chair, Dave Burn

I hope you all had a good Easter break.

Interns – Exeter University

This time last year we supported the University of Exeter employability programme, ‘Pathways to Politics and Government’. As a result we enabled four students to be placed in internships across a number of Democratic Services teams.

The programme was a great success, Exeter University received 128 student applications in total and positive feedback from both students and employers. Twenty organisations supported the programme, including several local councils, the Ministry of Defence and a number of London Borough Councils.

The programme is being delivered again this this year, from 17th– 28th June 2019,  and we are pleased to be able to promote the programme again this year. The University is looking to source internships in the sector, ideally in and around the London area.

The programme is designed to develop University of Exeter students’ understanding of careers in the politics and government sector. Twenty successful students from a mixture of year groups and disciplines will receive tailored training from sector experts on campus and then undertake a one-week paid internship with one of our partner employers (paid for by the University).

Please find more information about the programme here and an outline of the structure below:

Monday 17th – Thursday 20th June 2019

·        Training – A 4-day training programme, consisting of both intensive sector training from experts and employability training provided by the University of Exeter.

·        Project – During the training, students will apply their skills to real-life scenarios.

Monday 24th – Friday 28th June 2019

·        Internship – Each student will undertake a one-week internship with an employer, salary paid for by the University of Exeter.

It is a great opportunity to resource a specific project/piece of work, identify future talent, and help shape the future careers of students.

For anyone who would like more information on the programme or would be interested in hosting an internship, please contact Jess Woodhead at professionalpathways@exeter.ac.uk.

LGA responds to HCLG Committee Report on support for Councils to prepare for Brexit

Whilst colleagues might be hoping for some Brexit respite between now and Halloween, the attached report provides an interesting read. The report suggests that Brexit should not result in powers devolved from Brussels simply remaining in Whitehall. Whatever the outcome with Brexit, devolution of power from the centre remains in the spotlight.

Colleagues looking to purchase the current version of Knowles on Local Authority Meetings via the ICSA shop, should use the following code to receive a discount. The code is specifically for ADSO members: ADSO8

Do not mistake the “O” for a zero a common mistake, which if used will result in disappointment. Enjoy!
