Deadline extended: Democratic Services Officer (Committees), London Borough of Tower Hamlets

Website London Borough of Tower Hamlets

Salary £41,607 – £44,598
Full time – 35 hours per week

A rare opportunity has arisen to join the Democratic Services team working at the heart of Tower Hamlets Council. Two Democratic Services Officers are required on a full-time, permanent basis to join a modern, professional and friendly team providing comprehensive support and guidance to Tower Hamlets’ decision making meetings and elected Members.

The role of a Democratic Services Officer (Committees) is to provide efficient and high-quality support to the Council’s decision-making processes and meetings including administrative support to meetings, providing accurate advice to the public, Members and senior officers and maintaining a good understanding of relevant Constitution sections and related procedures.

This is an interesting and varied role where no two days are the same. At the heart of the role is a requirement to work independently to ensure key commitments and deadlines are met, whilst liaising with internal partners to ensure that information for decision makers is of high quality and with the public to promote engagement in local democracy.

Your work base will initially be the Town Hall at Mulberry Place; though later it will be the new town hall, Whitechapel (move planned for Autumn 2022). Extensive working from home will also be required. Attendance at evening meetings, sometimes at short notice, is also required.

The successful candidate(s) will already have an understanding of the work of local government, experience of managing high-profile and challenging Council/Committee meetings and an appreciation of the political nature of this sector. The post-holder will need to exercise sensitivity and diplomacy and will be expected to act in a politically neutral way at all times.

The Council continues to champion digital innovation and utilise smarter ways of working in its day-to-day business. Accordingly, a familiarity with modern communication technology will be important for the successful candidate. Experience of hybrid meeting and webcasting technology would be a bonus.
