Bedford Borough Council takes great care to recruit the very best people so that the services we provide to our community are first class. We believe that the best work gets done in an environment that’s enjoyable and which values, supports and encourages the development of its employees.  In return we expect our employees to work hard and be committed to help us achieve our vision and share our values.

We are looking for a skilled and experienced individual to join the Democratic and Registration Service at the heart of the Council’s decision making process. Bedford Borough Council is an authority with a directly elected Mayor and this role is an opportunity for someone to join an existing team to help to deliver high quality committee and scrutiny services to Members of the Council. With your existing experience, skills and knowledge you will quickly be able to make a proactive contribution to the service.

Responsibilities within this post include:
• Undertaking agenda planning, convening meetings, issuing agendas and taking minutes of the meetings.
• Ensuring timetables are met and co-ordination between committees and groups enhances the democratic process of the Council.
• To act as a senior member of the Democratic and Registration Services team to promote effective democratic functions within the Council.
• To work with team members to ensure consistency of approach and development of knowledge and skills across the team; and consistency in advice to officers and Members.

You must have a thorough knowledge of the law relating to Council committee meetings and have experience of supporting committees within a political environment. You should also have a sound knowledge of local government, possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, be committed to team working, and have a flexible approach to work.

This post holder must be available to work “out of the normal office hours” during the week as dictated by the requirements of the service.
