Salary: £31,548 – £39,774 per annum inclusive (Career Grade SO2 – PO3)
(starting salary dependent upon experience)

We have an exciting opportunity for a committed and enthusiastic individual to join the core Governance (Democratic Services) team at Barking & Dagenham Council.

The Governance team is responsible for delivering high-quality democratic support to the Council’s core political structure meetings and, following a recent restructure which increased the remit and size of the team, the administration of the main internal Boards that support the Council’s decision-making structures.

This role offers the opportunity for a highly motivated graduate or an individual with local government committee experience to work at the heart of the organisation, working closely with Councillors and senior officers to ensure that key decisions that directly affect the lives of residents are being properly made in an open and transparent way. The role also offers opportunities to support Councillors in undertaking in-depth scrutiny of local policy and performance issues, as well as supporting the delivery of elections and a recognised Member Development programme.

Candidates are expected to have an excellent standard of written English, excellent communication and IT skills, be organised and able to work outside normal office hours (typically 3 or 4 times a month). Other skills and qualities would include:

• Experience of working independently to produce high quality, evidence based written work;

• An awareness of governance processes and some of the key issues facing local government;

• Able to demonstrate good judgement and ability to maintain confidentiality;

• The ability to work constructively with individuals at different levels;

• Political awareness, preferably with experience of working in a politically charged environment.
