We offer a range of courses to support Councillors.
As experts on governance and constitutional matters, we can help Councillors to grow their skills and knowledge.
All our courses are facilitated by our experienced practitioners and trainers, who are used to working with Councillors.
We’ll deliver the training in your council, either in person or online.
ADSO have provided a range of training and development opportunities since 2009, for officers who are responsible for supporting governance and local democracy. We are pleased to also offer training for Councillors in these areas.
Our courses for Councillors include…
Chairing Skills
This course will help build your confidence and refresh your skills in chairing meetings of different sorts. The course includes:
- The role of the Chair
- Preparing for meetings, including different sorts of meetings
- Chairing skills – communicating and listening effectively
- Dealing with difficult people and situations
Overview and Scrutiny
This course will help participants understand the underlying roles and principles of scrutiny. It will also cover ways to enhance the delivery of a scrutiny review, to ensure that it provides impact and makes a difference to citizens. The course includes:
- Roles and principles of scrutiny
- Building a Work Programme
- Scoping and delivering a scrutiny review
- Making meaningful recommendations
- Measuring effectiveness
Constitutional Issues
This course will help you understand the constitutional context of being a councillor, so that you can play a more active and informed role in council meetings. The course includes:
- Roles and responsibilities of councillors
- Constitutional issues – rules of debate, motions and amendments, questions & more
- Different sorts of meetings
- Code of conduct
Bespoke courses
If you are an officer responsible for Councillor training, we can work with you to make sure the training is tailored to the needs of your Councillors. We also provide other bespoke courses for Councillors on request. We are happy to discuss the needs of your Councillors with you, if you don’t see what you want.

Course format
Courses are usually a half day (2 to 3 hours) or a full day (5 to 6 hours).
We can deliver courses either virtually or in person, whatever works best for you.
