Your new role
The Council is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and committed person to its well-regarded and friendly Democratic Services team. As part of a team, you will be providing a wide range of committee services to the Council, Cabinet, scrutiny bodies, regulatory committees and bodies (including school appeals panels) and assist in supporting Councillors to enable them to carry out their roles effectively. However, you will principally focus on supporting the scrutiny function and will act as the Council’s Statutory Scrutiny Officer as well as undertaking a lead role on health scrutiny matters. Through supporting the scrutiny process, you will manage allocated scrutiny reviews by the initial scoping of projects, carry out research, and produce the final project report. Alongside these roles, you will proactively develop the scrutiny process and promote the function in the Council and the community.

What you’ll need to succeed
To be successful in this position, you need an in-depth knowledge of the statutory framework for local authority decision-making and the scrutiny function. You will be highly self-motivated and be able to use your initiative to further develop the Council’s scrutiny function. You will be a well organised and methodical person with well-developed communication and report writing skills, IT adept (including a working knowledge of a committee management system, preferably ModernGov) together with team working skills and be able to develop effective working relationships with Councillors, senior officers and partners.
