Employability programme – University of Exeter

I hope you had a great Easter break despite some of the awful weather some of us have had.

I have had an e mail from the University of Exeter promoting their new employability programme  “Pathways to Politics, Government and the Public Sector”. This is set out below. As you will see, they are looking for expressions of interest in or around the London area to host an internship during the week 18 – 22 June. This is no financial cost to you.

“The University of Exeter are excited to be delivering a new employability programme, ‘Pathways to Politics, Government and the Public Sector’.  I am writing to you, as the Chair of the Association of Democratic Services Officers, to see if you might be able to promote this programme to your members. I’m looking to source a number of internships in this sector and feel that Democratic Services would be an ideal fit for our students.

The programme is designed to develop University of Exeter student understanding of careers in politics, government and the public sector. Twenty successful students from all year groups and disciplines will receive tailored training from sector experts on campus and then undertake a one-week paid internship with one of our partner employers. Please find more information about the programme here and an outline of the structure below:

Monday 18th – Friday 22nd June 2018

  • Training –a 4-day training programme, consisting of both intensive sector training from experts and employability training provided by the University of Exeter.
  • Project – During the training, students will apply their skills to real-life scenarios.
  • Visit to Westminster – Meet elected representatives and civil servants (provisionally scheduled for Wednesday 20thJune)

Monday 25th – Friday 29th June 2018

  • Internship – Each student will undertake a one-week internship with an employer, paid for by the University of Exeter.

As part of the programme, we are looking to engage local councils, central government and a number of public sector bodies.

Sarah Selway has kindly offered to host two internships with Exeter City Council and has passed on the contact details for a colleague within Devon County Council. A huge proportion of our student body are from the London area so I’d like to source a number of internships with different London Borough Councils if possible.

I wondered if there’s any way you can promote this opportunity to your various members to see if they’d be interested in hosting an intern as part of this programme.”

Please contact Jessica Woodhead at the University if you can help. Her e mail address is J.Woodhead@exeter.ac.uk. Her telephone number is 01392 722281.

Best wishes John
