Weekly message from John Austin, Chair

I hope you are all enjoying some glorious weather wherever you are. John Lynch, Pete Savage and I are spending 3 days in the Cotswolds playing golf. I can say without doubt that the weather is significantly better than the quality of our play – but that wouldn’t be too difficult!

The programme for conference is all but finalised so watch out for details of the early bird booking arrangements which will appear shortly. 2019 is the 10th anniversary of ADSO so we’ll be including a couple of different elements to the programme to celebrate our birthday. It promises to be another great couple of days.

I have been in discussions with Phil McCourt from LLG and the Wirral who as many of you will know is the author of Knowles. Some may remember that he did a session at our conference in 2017 to canvass early ideas for a new edition. Phil is very keen to continue that dialogue and for ADSO to play a bigger role in the content of the next edition. We have set up a thread on the forum so you can suggest ideas and have that discussion directly with Phil. This is a great opportunity for ADSO and I encourage you to get involved. My thanks to Phil for engaging with us.

Following the success last year, we are working with Exeter University again to place student interns into authorities. Thanks to those of you who have agreed to take part. I am keen to build relationships with the Higher Education sector to promote democratic services as a worthwhile profession for graduates. So if you have any connections with your local colleges or universities, please let me know.

That’s all for now as the golf course beckons. Have a great week
